Vineyards Go Through a State of Dormancy: Winter at TWABR

Its the time of pause and dormancy in winters as the air becomes still and cold; its during this time of winter that vineyards also go through a phase of dormancy. Our grape vines may be sleeping at this time; however, we are awake to take on the crucial tasks of winter. At the time of visiting our winery, you may have a lot of thoughts in your mind, but as soon as you take a look at the wine being poured from the bottle, you have a charismatic experience. Here, we will try to make you aware about what happens in our tasting room and vineyard as winter approaches.

During winter, grape vines also become dormant – this is indeed the beginning phase of the annual cycle in our vineyard. It is a beautiful time of the year during which the plant’s energy moves to its roots. When previous year’s leaves on the vine were still green, the plant accumulates carbohydrate reserves via photosynthesis. It stores these reserves in its roots & trunks so that these can be used when required at the time of spring. Also, its the right opportunity to effectively prune the wines when 95 percent of previous year’s growth is removed. We select the wood that can provide shape to our vines in the coming years.

pic1The wine is itself in a dormant state inside our winery during this time. It clarifies quietly as the yeast and other impure segments are settled at the bottom of the barrel. Its during this phase that excessive acidity leads to slow crystallization, thereby softening the wine. As far as our activity during the winter season is concerned, you can find us preparing for bottling, tasting the young whites, blending the reds and doing a lot more. Our bright and comfortable tasting room is located right beyond the cellar doors. Its a place where absolute comfort can be experienced while sipping wines during the winter season. In the tasting room, you will find people sitting & relaxing with their family & friends while relishing tasty wines.
