It was a truly memorable time in the history of The Winery at Bull Run when the first-ever Bluebell festival was organized on May 18. More than 1000 people participated in the Bluebell and had a great time while enjoying the pleasing cool weather and rain. People were delighted to relish the delicious food and wines while enjoying great music at the same time. Funds raised from the day were donated to three local charities – Manassas Battlefield Trust, Final Salute Inc. and NPLB Operation Second Chance.
During the event, TWABR owner Jon Hickox also expressed his special admire for these charity groups. He said that his affinity with the groups was because of their link with the battlefield. Hickox said that he had made a pledge to himself that before TWABR celebrates its one-year anniversary, he would organize a fund raising event for the purpose of raising funds for three local charity groups.
Expressing his affinity towards NPLB Operation Second Chance, Jon said “My father is a Vietnam veteran. Soldiers returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan receive a better reception now than what was during his time. These people, particularly the severely disabled ones, require huge assistance to get acclimated back into our society. I see my father in those people returning home wounded and so I want to try my best to help them.” Robert Bartlett from NPLB Operation Second Chance spoke about how the group helps wounded service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan recuperate with different outdoor life activities.
Expressing his affinity towards The Manassas Battlefield Jon said “As our neighbor, the Battlefield offers a marvelous landscape for our winery’s beautiful setting, and so its quite logical that as a great neighbor and partner in preservation, TWABR also extends support to the battlefield”. Another beneficiary of the event, Final Salute Inc. provides transitional housing, rent, deposit & utility assistance to the homeless women veterans in & near the D.C area., The executive director of Final Salute Inc, Gail Paige said that despite the rain, the event was a big success. He said that their group was proud to be a beneficiary of the event and they look forward to participate again next year.
As for entertainment, their was plenty of live music with performances from jazz band Sonyx, Willem Dicke, Andrea Pais, The Dreamscapes project, and Livin’ the Dream to make Bluebell one of the most entertaining wine festivals in VA. Delicious food was by the courtesy of Purple Onion, Bad to the Bone and Amphora. TWABR has successfully arranged many memorable wine events in Virginia and will continue doing so in future.
